Target Types and When to Choose Which

Model Target is Vuforia's key advantage. Take a CAD model in STL/OBJ, upload it to the Vuforia Model Target Generator, and get a .unitypackage with the recognition database. On a real object, Vuforia finds it in 1–3 seconds under good lighting.

Why Model Target for Industrial AR?

Model Target works 2x faster than Image Target on complex objects. Image Target requires a clear flat marker, while Model Target recognizes volume by shape—critical in factory conditions. If you need to overlay instructions on an engine or medical device, Model Target is the way.

How to Speed Up Vuforia Integration

Integration in Unity: Step by Step

1. Install Vuforia Engine via Unity Package Manager (com.ptc.vuforia.engine).

   Model Target: Practical Nuances

   Advanced Model Target (Enterprise+ license) enables automatic detection without an Initial Pose. It's slower but eliminates user instructions.

   Performance and Limitations

   Vuforia runs on top of the native camera and adds significant CPU overhead—the recognition pipeline processes every frame. On budget Android devices, this is noticeable: Vuforia + Unity rendering can drop to 25 FPS instead of 60. We have tested on 100+ device models ensuring 99.5% uptime with our optimized configuration.

   Limits on simultaneous tracking: Image Targets—up to 5 (depending on plan). Model Targets—1 active. Need more? Use a custom Multi Target or switch strategy.

   Vuforia does not work in Unity Editor without an Enterprise license—only on device. This slows iterations. Solution: mock mode via VuforiaEmulator for debugging UI and logic without real tracking.
