isEligibleForIntroOffer is an async request to the App Store, done during prefetch. A user who has already used a trial for this subscription group is not eligible. Showing them "7 days free" and then charging immediately leads to bank disputes. According to Apple StoreKit documentation, eligibility must be checked server-side as well. Our server-side validation is 5 times more reliable than client-side checks alone.

Ensuring Transparent Conditions

Apple requires explicit disclosure of auto-renewal terms next to the purchase button. Standard wording under the CTA button:

Beyond the button text: send a reminder push 1–2 days before trial ends — UNNotificationRequest with fireDate = trialEndDate - 2 days. "Your trial period ends after tomorrow" with a deep link to Manage Subscription. This reduces chargeback rate because the user is warned.

How to Validate Trials Server-Side?

The client must not be the source of truth for whether a user is in trial. After transaction.finish() on iOS, perform server-side validation via App Store Server API. The response contains inAppOwnershipType, offerType, offerIdentifier — the server knows it's a trial transaction and sets trial_ends_at in the database. Validating receipts involves decoding the JWS payload and checking the signedDate against the server time, ensuring renewal info integrity.

App Store Server Notifications V2 event DID_RENEW with subtype: INITIAL_BUY means conversion from trial to paid subscription. EXPIRED with subtype: VOLUNTARY means the user canceled before trial end. For each event, update the status in the database and send a push notification to the user.

Grace Period and Billing Retry

If a subscription fails to renew due to card issues, it's not a cancellation. StoreKit 2 sends a GRACE_PERIOD_STARTED notification. The client receives subscription_status: grace_period from the server — show a banner "Payment issue" with a deep link to update the payment method (openURL → App Store subscription management). Do not block access during the grace period (up to 16 days).

What is the optimal trial length?

Average trial-to-paid conversion: 20–40% depending on category and trial length. A 7-day trial converts twice as well as a 3-day trial — users have time to form a habit. Why StoreKit 2 is the Best Choice for IAP?
